Dexedrine Spansule 5 mg Dextroamphetamine Sulfate is the dextro isomer of the compound d,1-amphetamine sulfate, a sympathomimetic amine of the amphetamine group. Chemically, dextroamphetamine is d-alpha-methylphenethylamine, and is present in all forms of DEXEDRINE as the neutral sulfate.

SPANSULE CAPSULES

Each SPANSULE sustained-release capsule is so prepared that an initial dose is released promptly and the remaining medication is released gradually over a prolonged period.

Each capsule, with brown cap and clear body, contains dextroamphetamine sulfate. The 5-mg capsule is imprinted 5 mg and 512 on the brown cap and is imprinted 5 mg and ap on the clear body.

The 10-mg capsule is imprinted 10 mg-513-on the brown cap and is imprinted 10 mg-ap-on the clear body. The 15-mg capsule is imprinted 15 mg and 514 on the brown cap and is imprinted 15 mg and ap on the clear body. A narrow bar appears above and below 15 mg and 514. Product reformulation in 1996 has caused a minor change in the color of the time-released pellets within each capsule.

Inactive ingredients now consist of cetyl alcohol, D&C Yellow No. 10, dibutyl sebacate, ethylcellulose, FD&C Blue No. 1, FD&C Blue No. 1 aluminum lake, FD&C Red No. 40, FD&C Yellow No. 6, gelatin, hypromellose, polyethylene glycol, povidone, sodium lauryl sulfate, sugar spheres, and trace amounts of other inactive ingredients.

NARCOLEPSY DEXEDRINE SPANSULE 5 MG DEXTROAMPHETAMINE SULFATE

ATTENTION DEFICIT DISORDER WITH HYPERACTIVITY

As an integral part of a total treatment program that typically includes other measures (psychological, educational, social) for patients  (ages 6 years to 16 years) with this syndrome. A diagnosis of Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHDDSM-IV) implies the presence of the hyperactive-impulsive or inattentive symptoms that caused impairment and were present before age 7 years. The symptoms must cause clinically significant impairment, e.g., in social, academic, or occupational functioning, and be present in 2 or more settings, e.g., school (or work) and at home.

The symptoms must not be better accounted for by another mental disorder. For the Inattentive Type, at least 6 of the following symptoms must have persisted for at least 6 months: lack of attention to details/careless mistakes; lack of sustained attention; poor listener; failure to follow through on tasks; poor organization; avoids tasks requiring sustained mental effort; loses things; easily distracted; forgetful.

For the Hyperactive-Impulsive Type, at least 6 of the following symptoms must have persisted for at least 6 months: fidgeting/squirming; leaving seat; inappropriate running/climbing; difficulty with quiet activities; “on the go”; excessive talking; blurting answers; can’t wait turn; intrusive. The Combined Type requires both inattentive and hyperactive-impulsive criteria to be met.

This medication is used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorder – ADHD. It works by changing the amounts of certain natural substances in the brainDextroamphetamine belongs to a class of drugs known as stimulants. It can help increase your ability to pay attention, stay focused on an activity, and control behavior problems. It may also help you to organize your tasks and improve listening skills.

This drug is also used to treat a certain sleeping disorder (narcolepsy) to help you stay awake during the day. It should not be used to treat tiredness or to hold off sleep in people who do not have a sleep disorder.

How to use Dexedrine Capsule, Extended Release

Read the Medication Guide and, if available, the Patient Information Leaflet provided by your pharmacist before you start taking dextroamphetamine and each time you get a refill. If you have any questions, ask your doctor or pharmacist.

Take this medication by mouth with or without food as directed by your doctor, usually 1-3 times a day. The first dose is usually taken when you wake up in the morning. If more doses are prescribed, take them as directed by your doctor, usually 4-6 hours apart. Taking this medication late in the day may cause trouble sleeping (insomnia).

The dosage is based on your medical condition and response to treatment. Your doctor may adjust your dose to find the dose that is best for you. Follow your doctor’s instructions carefully.

Swallow the capsules whole. Do not crush or chew the capsules. Doing so can release all of the drug at once, increasing the risk of side effects.

What are possible side effects of Dexedrine Spansule?

Side effects of Dexedrine Spansule include:

  • hives,
  • difficulty breathing,
  • swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat,
  • chest pain,
  • trouble breathing,
  • lightheadedness,
  • hallucination,
  • new behavioral problems,
  • aggression,
  • hostility,
  • paranoia,
  • numbness,
  • pain,
  • cold feeling,
  • unexplained wounds,
  • skin color changes (pale, red, or blue appearance) in your fingers or toes,
  • seizure,
  • muscle twitches,
  • changes in your vision,
  • fever,
  • sweating,
  • shivering,
  • fast heart rate,
  • muscle stiffness,
  • twitching,
  • loss of coordination,
  • nausea,
  • vomiting, and
  • diarrhea

Get medical help right away, if you have any of the symptoms listed above.

The most common side effects of Dexedrine Spansule include:

  • dry mouth,
  • upset stomach,
  • loss of appetite,
  • weight loss,
  • headache,
  • dizziness,
  • tremors,
  • fast heartbeats, and
  • sleep problems (insomnia)

Tell the doctor if you have any side effect that bothers you or that does not go away.

Warnings

You should not use Dexedrine Spansule if you have glaucoma, overactive thyroid, severe agitation, moderate to severe high blood pressure, heart disease or coronary artery disease, or a history of drug or alcohol addiction.

Dexedrine Spansule may be habit-forming, and this medicine is a drug of abuse. Tell your doctor if you have had problems with drug or alcohol abuse.

Stimulants have caused stroke, heart attack, and sudden death in people with high blood pressure, heart disease, or a heart defect.

Do not use Dexedrine Spansule if you have used an MAO inhibitor in the past 14 days, such as isocarboxazidlinezolidmethylene blue injection, phenelzinerasagilineselegiline, or tranylcypromine.

Dexedrine Spansule may cause new or worsening psychosis (unusual thoughts or behavior), especially if you have a history of depression, mental illness, or bipolar disorder.

You may have blood circulation problems that can cause numbness, pain, or discoloration in your fingers or toes.

Call your doctor right away if you have: signs of heart problems–chest pain, feeling light-headed or short of breath; signs of psychosis–paranoia, aggression, new behavior problems, seeing or hearing things that are not real; signs of circulation problems–unexplained wounds on your fingers or toes.

Before taking this medicine

You should not use Dexedrine Spansule if you are allergic to any stimulant medicine, or if you have:

  • moderate to severe high blood pressure;
  • heart disease or coronary artery disease (hardened arteries);
  • overactive thyroid;
  • glaucoma;
  • severe anxiety, tension, or agitation (stimulant medicine can make these symptoms worse); or
  • a history of drug or alcohol addiction.

Do not use Dexedrine Spansule if you have used an MAO inhibitor in the past 14 days. A dangerous drug interaction could occur. MAO inhibitors include isocarboxazid, linezolid, methylene blue injection, phenelzine, rasagiline, selegiline, tranylcypromine, and others.
